Lonnie A. Slaughter, 84, of Sergeant Bluff, lowa, passed away Monday, Feb. 13, 2023, at a local hospital. Lonnie was born July 24, 1938, in Pender, the son of Buck and Melba (Powley) Slaughter. He grew up on a farm east of Rosalie, where he helped with farming, milking cows and when time permitted hunting coyotes with greyhounds. He graduated from Rosalie High School and attended Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, where he excelled at baseball. After graduation, Lonnie worked as a teacher and football/basketball coach, first in Cedar Bluffs, where he won state championships, and then in South Sioux City, Neb. He then went to work for Joe Morton Insurance as an insurance salesman for many years, retiring in 2001. He married Carolyn Heid on April 14, 1984.
Lonnie enjoyed fishing and hunting ducks on the Missouri River and chasing pheasants in northeast Nebraska near the family farm.
Being a sports fanatic, he loved watching and attending all sporting events, especially his grandchildren's activities. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and rarely missed a game. He was a member of the Siouxland National Bank Board, the South Sioux City School Board, and an active member of conservation organizations.
Lonnie is survived by his wife Carolyn Slaughter of Sergeant Bluff; children: Shelly
(Bob) Kuhl of Shawnee Mission, Kan., Shane (Diane) Slaughter of Sioux Falls, S.D., and
Nicole Reynolds of Sioux City, Iowa; grandchildren: Kayla (Daniel) McMullen of Prairie
Village, Kan., Jenna (Owen) Martin of Louisville, Ky., Ashley (Kevin) Finley of South Sioux
City, Shaye, Sami, and Blair Slaughter of Sioux Falls; great-granddaughter
Nora; sister: Patricia (Roger) Anderson of Lyons, ; and sister-in-law: Sharon
Slaughter of Lyons.
Lonnie was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Sherry Slaughter, nephews
Kirk and Scott Slaughter, sister Barb and her husband Paul Brewer, and brother Gene
Slaughter.
