The regular monthly Board of Education meeting was held Monday, October 9, 2023 in the Board Meeting Room in the Elementary Building. Administrators present were Superintendent Bland, Secondary Principal Burton, and Elementary Principal Charling. Diane Pelan-Johnson called the meeting to order at 8:00 p.m. and noted the Nebraska Open Meetings Law. Notice of this meeting was properly posted and/or published in the Oakland Independent by advance Public Notice in accordance with Board Policy #2008 with notice and advance agenda given to the President of the Board and all members prior to the meeting date. Groth moved that Brett Johnson, Kiley Johnson, Gus Ray and Aaron Anderson are absent, excused. Dane Johnson seconded the motion. There was no discussion. Voting results were: For Motion-5; Against Motion-0. Motion carried. ROLL CALL Roll Call was called with the following members present: Marilee Groth, Dane Johnson, Tim Magnusson, Henry Unwin and Diane Pelan-Johnson. REGULAR AGENDA Pelan-Johnson welcomed 2 visitors. CONSENT AGENDA Magnusson moved that the consent agenda be approved as presented. Unwin seconded the motion. There was no discussion. Voting results were: For Motion-5; Against Motion-0. Motion carried. Items included in the consent agenda were the approval of October 9, 2023 meeting agenda; approval of claims from the General Fund in the amount of $83,789.56 and Lunch Fund in the amount of $16,919.21 and the approval of minutes from the September 11, 2023 regular school board meeting. TREASURER’S REPORT Mrs. Bland reviewed the information on the treasurer’s report. APPROVAL OF POLICIES Mrs. Bland asked for questions regarding the proposed policies. After some discussion, Groth moved to approve the following policies as presented including Policy 6011 – Fire Instruction & Prevention; Policy 6012 – Flag Display & Patriotic Observances; Policy 6014 – School Attendance on Days of Scheduled Activities; Policy 6015 – Summer School; Policy 6016 – Homebound and Off-Campus Instruction; Policy 6017 – Homework; Policy 6018 – Grades; Policy 6026 – Emergency Dismissal; Policy 6027 – Field Trips; and Policy 6028 – The Extra-Curricular Activities Program. Dane Johnson seconded the motion. There was no additional discussion. Voting results were: For Motion-5; Against Motion-0. Motion carried. OUT OF STATE TRAVEL REQUEST Magnusson moved to approve the out of state travel request for the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN on October 31 – November 4, 2023. Unwin seconded the motion. There was no discussion. Voting results were: For Motion-5; Against Motion-0. Motion carried. JAG NEBRASKA AGREEMENT Mrs. Bland gave an explanation of JAG Nebraska (Jobs for America’s Graduates Nebraska) and how this program will benefit our students. After some discussion. Magnusson moved to approve the JAG Nebraska Memorandum of Understanding for the 2024-2025 school year. Unwin seconded the motion. There was no additional discussion. Voting results were: For Motion-5; Against Motion-0. Motion carried. BOARD MEMBER REPORTS Marilee Groth reported that Mr. Rexroad and the Advanced Construction class finished replacing the sidewalk on the south side of the Swedish Heritage Center. STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS No committees have met. ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS Elementary Principal Charling gave a shout-out to Mr. Brand for always being so quick to respond to the many technology related requests. This week is Fire Safety Week. The Oakland Fire Department will be here Thursday to meet with our students reviewing fire prevention. Parent Teacher conferences will be held October 16th and 19th from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. The Elementary will be participating in the Chamber of Commerce’s Trick or Treat on Oakland Avenue. Students will walk down to Oakland Avenue to visit businesses on October 31 from 2:00-3:00. The current enrollment is 223 students, which is the same as last month and up 3 from last year. Secondary Principal Burton reported current 7-12th grade enrollment of 179 students, which is the same as last month and down 15 from last year. Mrs. Burton reported that the UNO Pakistani Teacher Visit was held on September 22nd. This year the elementary building was included in the visit. Mrs. Burton reported that she will be attending the Wayne State College Hiring Fair to recruit potential candidates, as well as student teacher candidates to Oakland-Craig. A list of upcoming activities was provided. Superintendent Bland reported that Sean Linder will continue to help with our snow removal but we are looking at ways to make our part in the snow removal faster with a snow blower or another attachment for the tractor. Mrs. Bland reminded the Board that the superintendent evaluation needs to be completed and reported on during the December meeting. Mrs. Bland reviewed the parent survey results. The Oakland-Craig Public Schools Foundation will be honoring the first Hall of Fame recipients on October 20th. The annual audit for the district finances will take place on October 16th. Mrs. Bland concluded her report with a summary of sick and vacation days.
