Oakland welcomes new police department

Oakland Police Department vehicles are a welcome sight to many as the community has had to rely on the Sherriff’s Dept. for coverage as three officers called it quits last year. Chief James Hetzler and Assistant Chief Aaron Brensel began their duties last week ending a six-month absence of a department.

Hetzler, a Stanton native, was serving the Washington County’s Sheriff’s Department. He served in the United States Army with five years active duty as an infantryman, and has a high interest in Law Enforcement management. He, his wife and son are planning to move to the Oakland community as expressed by Hetzler during the June Council meeting.

The new chief said he is ready to build not only the police department but also seeks to build relationships with the community and its children

Hetzler brings with him a veteran law enforcement officer who is ready and willing to help the chief achieve those very goals.

Aaron Brensel has been in law enforcement for 23 years in both Iowa and Nebraska. He most recently served as a detective sergeant of narcotics and patrol captain. Brensel said has experience working with Hetzler and is ready to help bring his experience as an officer along side Hetzler to rebuild the Oakland Police Department.

One of the main reasons it took a while to hire new officers lies with the shortage of officers seeking employment in rural communities. The council discussed offering hiring bonuses should the right candidates be found as is in line with other communities.

Compensation packages were discussed and approved by the council.

Chief Hetlzer will receive a wage of $33.50 per hour/salary and will be given a $15,000 hiring bonus, $7,500 initially with the remainder coming in installments at six months and then 12 months.

Assistant Chief Brensel will receive $31.50 per hour/salary with a $5,000 hiring bonus paid in installments.
